PRESENTATION: USING YOUR LIFE STORY TO WRITE AN ARTIST STATEMENT

SPEAKER: ANITA VERNA CROFTS

How we describe our work and promote ourselves as artists matters.

This talk is designed for a spectrum of artists — from painters to sculptors, from potters to printmakers, watercolor artists to oil painters — who find themselves flummoxed by the task of crafting a compelling statement about their work. Perhaps you need a bio for your website homepage, or you've been asked to submit an artist statement for a juried show. No matter the format, this talk will use teachings and offer a quick exercise to help attendees envision an artist statement that is personal, succinct, meaningful, descriptive, and adaptable for various audiences and needs.

Anita Verna Crofts teaches and serves as Artist in Residence at the Communication Leadership graduate program at the University of Washington Department of Communication and is also on the writing faculty at the renowned Maine Media Workshop + College in Rockport, ME. Her work has appeared in Saveur and Gastronomica and her debut collection of gastrography essays, Meet Me at the Bamboo Table: Everyday Meals Everywhere, was published by Chin Music Press. She serves as a book judge for the James Beard Foundation.
