“Art encompasses everything around us and explains itself through endless forms – film, literature, drawing, painting, music, sculpture. They often overlap, with musicians who paint and painters who write. My own art falls on paper or canvas and is a reflection of where my eye finds beauty. It’s inspired by music, novels and drives down the highway. My medium varies, from large oils and watercolors to calligraphy and sketch-work.
Depending on my frame of mind, it could be a complex, detailed piece or a calm, simple abstract. Color and shape alight my sense of awe.
I spent my early life surrounded by nature in southwest Washington state. I look for sensory, seasonal details, like the aroma and quiet of a cedar forest. My formal training was figure-work at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. To me, the human form is the ultimate landscape.
My mission is to introduce others to a piece of the world they’ve never noticed.”

Volunteer Vern Pavilion at Sehmel Homestead Park
Our Summer Members’ Show promises to be a seasonal celebration of the unmatched creativity of a vibrant mix of artists working in a wide range of mediums who make up the Peninsula Art League. Exhibited inside the Volunteer Vern Pavilion, this dedicated Member Show will be a major highlight of the 40th Summer Art Festival, showcasing our Members’ indoor exhibition in addition to 100+ regional community booth artists.
This year our juror is Christine Buchanan, a renowned Gig Harbor sculptor and Fine Arts Department Chair at Peninsula High School. Christine’s unique perspective is deeply rooted in visual storytelling and a profound connection to the natural world.
Here is a chance to step inside the pavilion to discover a beautifully curated collection that represents the heart and soul of our league.
Our juror will be awarding Best of Show, 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and three Honorable Mention winners.
Summer Art Fair attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite for the People’s Choice Awards.
Christine has been at Peninsula High School for more than 30 years as an instructor of Sculpture, Pottery, Warm and Cold Glass, and Printmaking. She is also the Chair of The Fine and Performing Arts Department of Peninsula High School.
She graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and received her Masters at Lesley University in Teaching Through the Arts.
Her art has been in many exhibitions and private art collections.
