I am a lover of drawing and painting! In my landscape studio and Plein air paintings, I love the experience of capturing the light, color and beauty of the setting welcoming the challenges time and atmosphere present. Increasingly, I like to complete the painting in the field if possible but will use memory and photographic reference should I need to refine a work back in the studio.

In my portraits I strive for likeness and expressive character, requiring careful drawing, gesture and design. I work from photo references, but I especially like working from life, and will generally take photos of the pose I’m working on and complete the portrait back in my studio. In my approach to portraits in charcoal, I use various ways to build up my tones including applying powered charcoal with paint brushes. These give me control for subtle value gradations. Art for me is a journey of boundless learning, and love of creating; I hope this vision transfers to canvas or paper to move the viewer.

Volunteer Vern Pavilion at Sehmel Homestead Park

A Summer Art Festival Exclusive

Our Summer Members’ Show promises to be a seasonal celebration of the unmatched creativity of a vibrant mix of artists working in a wide range of mediums who make up the Peninsula Art League. Exhibited inside the Volunteer Vern Pavilion, this dedicated Member Show will be a major highlight of the 40th Summer Art Festival, showcasing our Members’ indoor exhibition in addition to 100+ regional community booth artists.

This year our juror is Christine Buchanan, a renowned Gig Harbor sculptor and Fine Arts Department Chair at Peninsula High School. Christine’s unique perspective is deeply rooted in visual storytelling and a profound connection to the natural world.

Here is a chance to step inside the pavilion to discover a beautifully curated collection that represents the heart and soul of our league.
